Dr. Derek Ching

Dr. Derek A. Ching is very excited to transition to Kapiolani Hospital. He was born and raised in Hawaii where he graduated from Iolani School. Dr. Ching received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Creighton University before returning home to do his Pediatric Residency at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. He started Children’s Doctors in 2007 with the help and mentorship of Dr. Franklin Young. Dr. Ching also spent 6 years working at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kapiolani Hospital. He has been practicing as a general Pediatrician for the past 18 years alongside Dr. Tawni Gesteuyala, who joined in 2011. From administering vaccines to sleep training, to sharing the benefits of exercise and a good diet, Dr. Ching draws from firsthand experience in parenthood to provide his patients focused and compassionate care that emphasizes the importance of healthy habits.

Dr. Ching is married to Tricia Matsukawa. She is the president of Matsukawa Insurance Company which has been helping local families for the past 89 years. They have two sons aged 12 and 10 along with a 8-month-old daughter. Dr. Ching currently sits on the boards for The Toddler Program (a preschool in Kaimuki) and Iolani’s alumni board.

With his free time, Dr. Ching loves to work out, fish, dive, cook and just hang out with his family and friends.

Dr. Tawni Gesteuyala

Dr. Tawni Gesteuyala, “Dr. Tawni” to her patients and their families, grew up on the windward side of Oahu in Kahaluu. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of California Los Angeles and then returned home for medical school at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. Dr. Tawni completed her Pediatric Residency at the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children and then stayed on as Chief Resident before joining Dr. Ching and Children’s Doctors L.L.C. in 2011.

Dr. Tawni’s role as a pediatrician is to be a member of her patient’s healthcare team, working together in a partnership with both children and their families. As a mother of two beautiful girls, she enjoys swapping parenting stories and loves getting to know her patients and their experiences. It is a privilege for her to be able to watch her patients grow and thrive.

Outside of work, Dr. Tawni spends her time mastering the ballet bun as a dance mom of two, attempting to defy age and an achy body by getting back into surfing, exploring new dessert places, and hanging out with her family and friends.
